Services
In addition to community information, we offer library
services accessible from home for your greater convenience. You can review
the library catalog from your home computer, reserve a title you would like
to read, renew any items you have checked out, and download full-text
periodical articles from electronic databases.
To avail yourself of any of these services, you only need a
MidHudson library card in good standing from your "home library."
The MidHudson card is good at any library in the system but you may only
have one library card!
To acquire a card, you must go to your home library in person
and show photo identification that proves you live in the home library
area. If you are a non-resident of the district, you may purchase a card
for an annual fee of $30.00 and receive all the library privileges of the
Marlboro Free Library.
Our Collection
The Marlboro Library is
proud of its diverse collection of materials, including books, movies,
& magazines.
Public Catalogs
Need to search for
materials? You can do so through our web site.
Search the Midhudson
Library System catalog
When you are seeking out material to borrow, we offer you the holdings of
our library as well as those of all 70 libraries in the MidHudson Library
System. By using the Request-A-Title function, you may place a hold on the
title you select. This is called a "System Hold."
Search the SouthEastern (SEAL) New York Library catalog
If you fail to find what you desire in the MidHudson catalog, widen your
search to this database that includes catalogs from neighboring counties.
These include school, public, private and academic libraries. If you find
what you desire, call us or stop in, so we can place an interlibrary loan
request for you.
Search the New York State Library catalog
If you fail to find what you desire by searching SEAL, expand your search
to the state-wide level. When we place an interlibrary loan request for you
at this level, indicate how much money you would be willing to pay to
receive this item, as there may be a charge from the loaning library.
Search the Library
of Congress catalog
If your title is not held at the state level, try the national level with
the Library of Congress. This is a good search to make to double-check the
authenticity of the title or author. Holdings are not listed, but if you
don't find it here, it's a good indication that your information may be
misspelled or have some other inaccuracy.
There is even a catalog we search at the Library called WorldCat that lists
holdings on an international basis, so we should be able to get the most
obscure titles for you. Please keep in mind that there will most likely be
a charge levied at this level.
Research Databases
Through our web site,
using your Marlboro Library card, you may gain access to a wealth of
information including full-text newspaper and magazine articles, and
genealogy resources.
Downloadable Audiobooks
Audiobooks are available
for downloading 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.
Local History and Genealogical Research
We have a collection of
books, photos and other materials that are kept protected under lock and
key. Genealogists and Local History researchers are encouraged to call
ahead so we can have staff available to assist. We ask that you review and
sign our use policy of local history materials at the Circulation Desk.
Telephone and e-mail inquires are handled as soon as we can get to them. We
ask for a donation from researchers to cover the cost of photocopying and
time spent by staff.
An exciting new resource
at the Library is HeritageQuest Online. HeritageQuest offers many resources
for genealogical research including U.S. federal censuses from 1790, 1800,
1810, 1840, and 1870; over 16,000 downloadable titles from the UMI
Genealogy & Local History collection; expert verification and indexing,
and much more.
Other special
collections include the Frederic Goudy Collection and Italian language
books and videos.
Internet/Computer/Wireless Access
The library has eight
internet-ready computer terminals that can be used by all those holding a
Mid-Hudson Library System library card in good standing. Word processing programs and Microsoft
products, such as MS Word and Excel are available on these terminals.
The library also offers
secure, free, high-speed (broadband) wireless Internet access to library
customers. Owners of laptops,
notebooks or other portable web-enabled devices equipped with wireless
network interface cards may use this service, in or near the library
building during library hours.
Notary Public
As a public service, the
library provides notarial functions free-of-charge. We suggest that you
call ahead to determine when the notary is available to serve you. Please
remember to bring photo identification.
Passport Services
Our passport service
operates on an appointment-only basis. Please call ahead to make an
appointment. For information on passport requirements go to travel.state.gov.
FAX
Members of the public
may send or receive faxes from the library. Costs for incoming faxes are
$1.00 per page. Outgoing faxes cost $2.00 for the first page, and $1.00 for
each subsequent page. Cover sheets are available at the Library.
Photocopy Services
We have a self-service
public access photocopier that costs $.15 per image for letter (8 ½ x
11"), and legal sizes (at 8 ½ x 14"), and $.30 per image for 11 x
17". Double-sided copies are also available. Color copies are $1.00
per image for letter (8 ½ x 11") and legal sizes (at 8 ½ x 14"),
and $2.00 per color image for 11 x 17". No collating.
Tax Forms
In February, we receive
New York State and Federal tax forms available for distribution to the
public. We can also assist you in getting forms and instructions via the
Internet.
Helium Tank
PARTY TIME!!!
Thanks to the Friends of
the Library, we have a self-service helium tank which can be used for
inflating party balloons. The cost is $.50 per balloon. Bring your own balloons!
Holiday Costumes
Library cardholders in
the Marlboro School District are welcome to borrow our holiday costumes,
with a $50 cash deposit. We currently own a Bunny Suit and a Santa Suit,
which are offered on a first-come first-serve basis. The cash deposit is
returned in full unless the suit has been damaged or soiled while on loan.
Exhibit Space
If you are an artist, or
know an artist, that would like to exhibit work in our Community Room,
contact the Library Director and arrange a portfolio showing. Shows hang
for two months on a non-commission basis.
Your Account
Have a question about
your account status or would you like to renew your book?
Community Room
Our community room is a multi-purpose room that is used for
adult and children's library programs, meetings, and events. When not
scheduled for library functions, it is available for not-for-profit uses.
Some organizations use the community for regular meetings or classes and it
has also been made available to artists as an exhibit space.
Please contact the director if your not-for-profit group would
like to reserve the space.
Computer Classes
The
library offers instruction in the following areas:
Internet (includes safety and reliable sources), E-mail, Windows Explorer,
Computer Software Maintenance, Virus and Worm Protection, Family Websites
and Blogs, eBay and Windows Control Panel. Classes or individual
instruction can be provided. Call 236-7272, ext.15 to make an appointment.
Adult Craft Classes
Usually
on a seasonal basis, we have volunteers willing to teach a decorative or
handicraft to adult members of the community. Most are offered in the
evening, but some are offered in the afternoon. There is usually a nominal
charge to cover the cost of materials.
Other Classes
We
also serve as a classroom for other community organizations for subjects
that include Adult Driver's Ed., Hunter Training, Estate Planning, and
Italian Language Classes. "Defensive
Driving" is offered by Virginia Upton and prices vary. Contact the
Library for fee information. The Library staff does not schedule these
classes. We are approached by the instructors who notify us when they have
time in their schedules.
