About the Marlboro Free Library

The Marlboro Free Library is chartered with New York State as a School District Public Library, which means that we share our tax district with the Marlboro Central School System. Full-time Marlboro school district residents have full membership privileges, as do non-residents who pay an annual membership fee. Our budget is open to review by the public and voted on annually. We are members of the MidHudson Library System, a state mandated entity that serves public libraries in Columbia, Dutchess, Greene, Putnam, and Ulster Counties.

Our publicly elected Board of Trustees meets regularly (usually monthly) and oversees most areas of the library except library operations which fall under the library director's responsibility. The Board hires the library director. Meetings are open to the public.

Help the Library

The Library uses the donation of books, CDs, and movies in good condition in various ways, including placing them in the current Library collection and/or passing them on to the Friends of the Library who use the books for their popular Used Book Sales. Please be aware that all donations become the property of the Library to use as the Library deems fit.

Checks made payable to the Marlboro Free Library directly and immediately benefit the library.

Building Fund

Growing for our Future:

Our community is growing, and so is the library!

The Marlboro community is growing by leaps and bounds.  Everywhere we look, we can see new housing developments, much needed expansions and renovations of our schools, and even a lot more traffic!  Because the library is considered by many to be the heart of the community, it is constantly striving to keep pace with our ever-growing community.  We serve as a copy center, DVD rental location, meeting space for a diverse group of community organizations, internet access location, etc

Alas, although we would like to offer the community even more services and programs, and would like to expand our collection of books, Local History, DVD’s, and other media, we simply have outgrown our space!  Please consider donating to the building fund today.

Getting a Library Card

 Adults:

If you’re over 18 and would like a library card, simply stop by our circulation desk with proof of Marlboro School District Residency  (such as a drivers license or utility bill), and fill out a registration card.  You will have your library card on-the-spot and you may use it to check-out materials the same day.

Under 18:

For residents under the age of 18, a parent or guardian must be present to sign the registration card.

Replacement Card:

If you already had a Marlboro Library card but have lost it, you will need a replacement card.  Replacement cards cost $5.

Non-Resident Card:

If you’re not a Marlboro School District resident but would like a library card, you may purchase a non-resident card for a $30 annual fee.

Friends of the Marlboro Library

   Book Barn

Established in 1969, the Friends of the Library create awareness and appreciation of our library services. They raise funds for the Library by selling donated books from the Book Barn. If you would like to donate books, please call Elsie Nicklin-McKay at 236-4080. They also organize a carol-sing, host a major fundraising event in the Fall, and administer an annual fund drive. Monies that they have raised in the past paid for such library improvements and enhancements as a circulation desk for the children's area, a helium tank for inflating balloons, baby-changing stations for library restrooms, holiday costumes for the public to borrow, outdoor plants and tubs to beautify the grounds, a color printer, a new American flag, and many, many other items. They meet once a month at the library. They are always looking for people who believe that local volunteerism makes a difference, and for people with good ideas. Please call or e-mail Elsie Nicklin-McKay if you would like to join.

Internet Use Policy:

Access by patrons to electronic formats at the Marlboro Free Library is an extension of the Library's responsibility to provide effective sources to assist patrons in locating information. Internet services may be used only for lawful purposes.

The Board of Trustees affirms the American Library Association's "Code of Ethics" which states in part:

"... We uphold the principles of Intellectual freedom and resist all attempts to censor library resources consulted, borrowed, acquired or transmitted..."

"...We protect each Library user's right to privacy and confidentiality with respect to information sought or received and resources consulted, borrowed, acquired or transmitted.."

The Board of Trustees respects the responsibility of parents to monitor their children's reading and access to information. It is not the obligation of either the Board or the Library staff to monitor or review minors, or any patrons utilization of databases or information sources accessed at the Library.

Community Room Use Policy:

Requests for the use of the space are made to the Library Director. Requests are scheduled in the order in which they are received. A Community Room Use Application Form may be obtained at the Marlboro Free Library.

Community Room space is available for the gathering of any responsible group or organization, civic, educational, intellectual, or cultural whose purpose is legal and whose conduct is in accord with Library rules and regulations. The Library does not necessarily advocate or endorse the viewpoints of meetings or meeting room users. Use of the room is free of charge. Any group which is authorized to use the Community Room space shall not be allowed to charge admission for any program.

The Library Board reserves the right to cancel any program that it deems inappropriate or inconsistent with the Library's stated goals and objectives, or inappropriate for the Library facility. If a request for Community Room use is, for any reason, denied by the Library Director, the person or group may appeal the decision directly to the Board of Trustees, through the Board President.
